Motorcycle communication systems from Sena

Sena was established in 1998 with a focus on various bluetooth communication technologies for businesses worldwide. The founder of Sena – an avid rider – came up with the idea to integrate the same bluetooth technology into a headset for motorcycle helmets. Thus, in 2010, the first Sena bluetooth intercom system was born, as well as one of their best-selling models, the SMH10. This system has since been replaced by the Sena 10S. But this was only the beginning, they have expanded their range to include a bluetooth headset for bicycle helmets, outdoor activities, and bluetooth equipment for industrial communication. Meanwhile, Sena has grown to become the absolute market leader in communication, making them the direct competitor of Cardo, the other major motorcycle intercom manufacturer.

The most stable bluetooth connection with Sena

When it comes to communication, Sena’s intercom systems are the best. The communication is smooth; they have a system available for every rider type. Sena’s bluetooth intercom systems are so popular that this is the brand all helmet manufacturers want to work with. Sena collaborates with AGV, Arai, HJC, Schuberth, and Shoei to equip their helmets with a bluetooth intercom that seamlessly fits the design of their helmets. If you have a helmet that is not equipped for an integrated Sena headset, you can always opt for a Universal Sena intercom that is suitable for all helmets that have a recess for speakers.

From Bluetooth to Mesh

Sena intercom systems started with a bluetooth headset, which made it possible to connect to your mobile phone to receive calls and listen to music. But also to listen to FM radio, link GPS navigation to hear the instructions, and communicate with another motorcyclist. The latest new techniques applied in communication is the introduction of Mesh communication.

What is communication through the Mesh network?

A Mesh network is a dynamic network with impressive features in which all active modules are connected to each other. Each connected system adds to the network’s stability. The dynamic nature of the network automatically distributes the workload across all available headsets. If a Sena headset temporarily gets disconnecter, the rest of the Mesh network compensates for this. As soon as the rider wants to rejoin the group, they are automatically reintegrated into the network. This results in the most stable intercom connection ever, where the connection is faster, easier and reestablishes connection if someone drops out. This network has a significantly larger range and with the Sena 50S Harman Kardon, you can include up to 24 people in a Group Mesh. Through the Open Mesh network you can communicate with virtually an unlimited number of people. Sena is the first manufacturer to have achieved this.

Which Sena bluetooth headset is right for me?

The range of Sena bluetooth headsets is so extensive, that you can quickly lose overview. We have compiled the following guidelines for you that will make it easier for you to find your way.

  • In the numbers in the name of each Sena headset (3, 5, 10, 20, 30, 50), the capabilities of the respective Sena headset increase. The letter following the number indicates the mode of operation that is applicable.
  • S: For an intercom operated with a rotary dial or Jog-Dial. This control is glove-friendly.
  • R: For an intercom that you can operate with buttons. Adjusting with thick gloves on is no problem, and you can’t accidentally operate your headset with the collar of your motorcycle jacket if it bumps against the Jog-Dial.

We briefly discuss the main systems, at the basis of all systems is the ability to connect with your mobile phone and navigation system. FM radio is not provided in every device.
