Autumn Motorcycle Clothing Tips
Motorcycle clothing for autumn should provide protection against changing temperatures, showers, and wind. At the same time, we want to ride comfortably and have the flexibility to brave the autumn weather without any problems. We provide you with the following tips.
Waterproof motorcycle jacket with removable thermal lining
Motorcycle jackets with a waterproof membrane and the added flexibility of a removable thermal lining, are perfect for autumn. If you set off during the chilly hours in the morning, you can leave the lining inside the jacket, and if the weather improves, you can remove the lining so you don’t get too hot. With a 2-in-1 motorcycle jacket, you can easily adjust the jacket according to the weather.
Those who want to be protected against the rain, can opt for a motorcycle jacket with a laminated waterproof membrane. The waterproof membrane and the outer textile layer are connected (laminated, so to speak), which prevents the jacket from absorbing water and cooling you down. As a result, a laminated motorcycle jacket is slightly warmer than a jacket where the membrane is integrated in a different way. You will find laminated jackets are equipped with more ventilation options.

In terms of waterproof jackets, Gore-Tex motorcycle jackets are still among the very best option when it comes to waterproof jackets with breathable properties. This ensures good ventilation and optimal evaporation of sweat.
Waterproof motorcycle pants with or without removable thermal liner
Just like the aforementioned motorcycle jackets, it’s useful for your motorcycle pants to be waterproof as well. Leather motorcycle pants won’t be, but a textile motorcycle pants almost always is. A removable thermal liner is handy, or you could remove the liner and wear the motorcycle pants over your regular pants or jeans. In this case, make sure the motorcycle pants can fit over your own pants to prevent them from pinching.
Use regulating undergarments
It’s a good idea to invest in regulating undergarments for the right protection and comfort in varying temperatures. A thermal shirt and thermal pants have moisture-wicking properties and provide improved temperature regulation. You get an extra layer of insulation and will experience more comfort when riding a motorcycle in the autumn.

Mid-season motorcycle gloves
Choose light to medium lined motorcycle gloves that are waterproof. This way, you are protected against the rain and your hands won’t get too cold or too hot. Many riders use mid-season motorcycle gloves all year round. In winter, it’s best to combine mid-season gloves with hand guards and/or handlebar heating. During the summer, they are cool enough for the hot weather and ready for a potential downpour.
Waterproof motorcycle boots
Wear waterproof motorcycle boots with soles that provide sufficient grip on wet surfaces during the fall. This way you prevent wet and cold feet and you will not simply slip in rainy weather. Those who do not have waterproof motorcycle boots or wear motorcycle shoes, can use boot covers to keep the feet dry.
Neck Warmer or Balaclava
I ride with a multifunctional neck protector all year round. Oxford offers these in handy sets of 3. They are available in different colors and have a fun prints, this way you’ll always protect your neck.
A neck warmer or balaclava that is windproof will protect your neck from cold wind. Only at very low temperature, I wear a windproof and insulated neck warmer.
Rain gear for motorcycles
Those who do not have waterproof motorcycle clothing, or whose motorcycle clothing is no longer fully waterproof during heavy showers, can invest in good rain gear for the motorcycle. It is easy to put on and doesn’t take up much space.
Increase your visibility
During the autumn, daylight begins to decrease and there is more occurrence of haze and fog. Therefore, it’s crucial to ensure that you stand out in traffic. Wearing motorcycle clothing with reflective strips or fluorescent patches can help you with this. Also, equip your helmet with reflective stickers, in France this is mandatory. Those who still have doubts about visibility, might consider wearing a fluorescent vest.

During autumn, weather conditions can change rapidly, therefore wearing layers is a good approach to adjust your outfit to the temperatures. Don’t choose clothing that is too hot and also be prepared for rain, this way you’ll get through autumn without any issues.
