The safest helmet closure: Micrometric or Double D-ring?
RAD compares the two most common helmet closures: Micrometric VS Double D-rings. Which helmet closure is the best?
Micrometric or Double D-ring
Two types of closures can be distinguished for full-face helmets:
- Helmets with micrometric closure or quick release
- Helmets with double D-ring
Micrometric Closure
The micrometric closure or quick release is most commonly used in motorcycle helmets, as it is the most practical way to quickly secure and release the helmet. It consists of a closure with teeth that click into the ratchet mechanism. The micrometric closure is made of plastic or metal, with the metal version being the safest version of the two. Due to its ease of use, the micrometric closure is the most common.
It is important to always check and possibly adjust the closing strap. This is to compensate for the wear of the helmet lining if the helmet becomes a bit loose. Also if your weight fluctuates, it is important to adjust this occasionally. This way you can be sure that the helmet is securely closed. Try to always do this. Because if you ever need the strap to keep the helmet on, you won’t have time to adjust it mid-air.
+ Easy to use
+ Various positions possible thanks to the mechanism
– Less safe than the double D-ring
– You will adjust the belt less out of habit

Double D-ring Closure
Many racing organizations require a double D-ring closure. This is the safest possible chin strap closure that holds the helmet firmly on the head. This closure works like a friction knot. The way you thread the strap through the two D-rings allows you to pull the strap to the perfect setting. When the D-rings are closed, there is so much tension that the closure cannot come loose. If you pull the red loop, the tension is released and the closure opens. Another advantage is that you’ll always pull the closure tight each time you close it, so the helmet always stays firmly on your head.
It takes some practice to smoothly operate a double D-ring closure, especially when you’re wearing motorcycle gloves. But don’t worry, you’ll quickly get the hang of it.
+ The only closure allowed in motorsport
+ Can withstand the most pull force
+ Every time you secure the helmet, you adjust the closure to the correct fit
– Requires some practice to operate smoothly

Convenience VS Safety
A micrometric closure is easy, there is no doubt about that, but the double D-ring closure is the safest. If your motorcycle has a lot of hp and you want to ride at high speeds, we will automatically recommend a helmet with a double D-ring closure. The choice is yours!
