The Best Scooter Helmets of 2024

Since January 2023, it has been mandatory in the Netherlands to wear an ECE approved helmet on the moped or scooter, this was already the case in Belgium. This new helmet law resulted in a peak sale of Jet helmets, the favorite type of helmets for those riding a scooter.

What is a Jet helmet?

A jet helmet or open helmet is the type of helmet that protects the wearer’s head, but does not provide full coverage like the full-face helmet. These helmets do not have a chin guard and leave your face, chin, and jaws exposed. Where the typical jet helmet is often equipped with a small visor, a new type of maxi jet helmet has been introduced that also covers the jaws and is equipped with a larger visor that shields your entire face from the wind.

Looking to buy a new scooter helmet?

We have some nice suggestions for you! For this article, we only chose helmets with the latest ECE-certification 22.06 to provide you with the most recent update in helmet safety.

We have some classic scooter helmets available with an integrated sun visor that only protects your eyes. Ideal for scooters with a classic look like a Vespa or scooters that are limited to 45 km/h. Also some streetfighter helmets with an aggressive look and a few maxi jet helmets for when you want something more shielded.

Classic Scooter Helmet

The Scorpion Belfast Evo helmet boasts a classic retro look and an excellent fit. Thanks to the fiberglass helmet shell, this is a very lightweight scooter helmet. The integrated sun visor protects your eyes from the sun and any potential bugs. If you have no need for the integrated sun visor and prefer to wear motorcycle goggles, then the back of the helmet features a strap to keep the motorcycle goggles in place. The helmet is equipped with a micrometric closure so that the helmet stays secured on top of your head.

The HJC V31 helmet can be compared to the Scorpion Belfast Evo helmet. The biggest difference between the two helmets is that the HJC V31 helmet is equipped with a double D-ring closure. Personally, I’m a fan of this type of closure, it’s practically indestructible and the safest closure of the two. The other difference lies in the fit, which is slightly different between the two models. The only real way to experience this is by trying on both helmets.

Streetfighter helmet

You can recognize a streetfighter helmet by its distinctive chin piece (which you can unclip) and the unique look of these helmets. Especially popular among young people or those looking for a helmet that looks aggressive.

Attention: The chin bar can give a false sense of security, it does not provide the same protection as the chin bar on a closed helmet shell.

The HJC I20 helmet is a scooter helmet with a mechanical look, thanks to the bold lines in the design. The chin piece can be easily removed. The versions with contrasting upper shell look like a post-war helmet without the chin piece. The helmet is equipped with ventilation that is adjustable in the chin piece. The sun visor can be easily operated with tabs on both sides and the helmet is equipped with a micrometric quick release. The helmet is prepared for the installation of a HJC 20B intercom system.

The Scorpion EXO-Combat II helmet looks just a bit tougher than the HJC I20. The chin guard can easily be clicked on or off. With this helmet, both the top ventilation and the chin ventilation can be regulated. The sun visor can be operated on the left side with a tab and the helmet is equipped with a micrometric closure. Both helmets have their own unique look and fit. Same as the classic helmets, I advise you to compare them or simply choose the helmet that best matches your style.

Maxi jet Helmets

The Scorpion EXO-City II is a comfortable and light maxi-jet helmet. The long visor protects your entire face from the wind and there’s also an integrated sun visor to block out the sun. The helmet is equipped with top ventilation to keep it cool during the summer. The chin strap has a soft cover for extra comfort and the helmet has a micrometric closure. This compact maxi jet helmet is very competitively priced, making this scooter helmet the best choice for those venturing into busy city traffic.

Luxury Scooter Helmet

The HJC RPHA-31 helmet is a luxury maxi jet helmet. RPHA stands for Revolutionary Performance Helmet Advanced. This is the most comfortable, luxury scooter helmet on this list.

The helmet covers your jaws much more than all the helmets mentioned above. The visor extends below your chin and this can be extended a little further and clicked into place. This way, you won’t be surprised if you look up and catch the wind. You can adjust the built-in sun visor yourself, so it gets closer or further away from your face. The inner lining feels very soft and the top ventilation is adjustable on both sides with an easy roller system. The steel micrometric closure is extra safe and to complete the picture, you can also install the HJC 21B or HJC 50B intercom system in the helmet. The perfect helmet for those who want to travel longer distances with maximum comfort.
