Quick-release mechanism for motorcycle boots
The BOA Fit System is an innovative closure system used in modern motorcycle boots. This system replaces traditional laces and Velcro with a convenient turning knob. Instead of classic laces, these shoes are equipped with thin steel cables (49 strands of stainless steel wrapped with nylon) that run through guides. Where you would usually tighten and tie loose laces, the ends of the cables come out on a turning knob. By turning the knob to the right (dialing in), you pull the cables tight and the boots are evenly closed. By pulling the knob upwards (for quick release), you open the motorcycle boots again.
This makes the BOA closure so convenient: the boots close evenly without the hassle of laces or Velcro, and it’s more compact than the buckles you often see on adventure motorcycle boots. Anyone who has ever seen Back to the Future II might remember the self-closing Nike sneakers. Although the BOA-closure still works manually, this system comes closest to that kind of futuristic technology.
The origin of the BOA system
The company BOA Technology was founded in 2001 by Gary Hammerslag. He developed the BOA closure system for snowboard boots, because he wanted to spend as much time on his snowboard as possible without struggling with laces. In search of a way to put on his snowboard boots quickly and easily, he created the BOA system, which also sat comfortably without the disadvantages of traditional laces.
The system proved so successful that it was quickly implemented in the sports world, and nowadays you can also find it in motorcycle boots.
